Heroic evolution
October 15, 2007 at 11:30 am | In Uncategorized | Leave a CommentThere’s another reason why ‘Heroes’ speaks to each of us, you know. After all, they are ordinary people, living extraordinary lives. It’s because we know inside that each of us has some kind of special power. We look at ourselves and know that there’s something more. It’s an itch that has to be scratched – something almost just below our awareness. You may not even be aware of it yet…
When I was younger I was drawn to comic books – to the Marvel characters, to Superman, Daredevil, the X men. Each of them had some ability that was out of the ordinary: something almost magical. I was drawn, too, to myths and legends: to a world where anything was possible. I used to love (and I fully realise that this is showing my age) ‘The Tomorrow People’ – a TV show where a new evolution of humanity brought new abilities and new difficulties.
It’s a recurrent theme in our stories, in our myth, in our legends. Each of our cultures has it – the legend of a people who are more powerful than we currently experience. The Irish have the Tuatha de Danann, the Mediterranean cultures have Atlantis, the Polynesians have Lemuria – a magical race of incredible possibilities and abilities that we’ve forgotten. The more I’ve looked, the more I’ve become convinced that each of us has a connection to a dimension that I would have to call the ‘super normal’. It’s a dimension that’s as real as this one – it’s just that we don’t experience it all the time. It’s the dimension of intuition, of being linked to each other. It’s the dimension of being aware of the future: of déjà vu. It’s a dimension where spontaneous healing can happen, a dimension where ‘normal’ rules don’t apply. It’s the dimension of ‘weird stuff’. As we move further and further into the 21st Century, these abilities are going to start to emerge.
Do I see that in my experience yet? Increasingly, I do – and yet I know that I am just starting out. Increasingly I find others who are exploring the realms of the possible – and finding that this world is bigger and more amazing than we could possibly imagine.
